Active Life Grant

Pacific Camps was designed to give children a safe and engaging way to spend their summer and before and after school hours and to give working parents, especially single mothers, affordable child care by staff who are committed to the welfare of children.

Currently, there are immense gaps in recreational services, fitness opportunities, and physical education classes for Ventura County's lowest income families. The Active Life Project will increase the number of students participating in physical education activities and the percentage of those students that make progress toward state standards for physical education.

Not only are schools offering fewer physical activity opportunities, but there are also few affordable and accessible opportunities for children to access physical activities during non-school hours (Overweight Kids: Why Should We Care? By the California Research Bureau with requests by Senators Martha Escutia and Cathie Wright, December 2000).

The Active Life Project was designed to help children of working parents achieve California's seven physical fitness challenge standards, which dovetail with six PEP program elements: 1) fitness education and assessment (e.g., individual assessment and tracking through fitness diaries), 2) various motor skills and fitness activities (e.g., track and field, ropes course, weight training, sports leagues), 3) cognitive concepts (e.g., credentialed teachers, family health information) 4) social and cooperative skills (e.g., atmosphere of respect, mentoring, awards, responsibility curriculum), 5) healthy eating habit and nutrition (e.g., healthy nutrition class and CPR training), and 6) professional development for Pacific Camps staff.

Participants in Active Life will learn about fitness, movement skills, and healthy lifestyle choices in a fun, safe environment with children of all levels of abilities and similar family structure and financial constraints. Pacific Camps mission is to keep children from unhealthy eating habits like this.
